For many this will be your first introduction to our company, Modern Icon LLC, so we thought it best to share a little bit of our story.

Modern Icon LLC was started about 3 years ago with the idea that the customer comes first and we are here to serve them, not the other way around. That sounds like an obvious statement that any manufacturing company would make, but the reality is that for most of the Industry it couldn’t be further from the truth. We’d like to do our part to change that by offering the highest quality products, hand made in the US, at reasonable prices.

Over the last several years we have made it a point to give back to the people who give so much every day. The return we have received is priceless, you just can’t put a price tag on the relationships and trust that comes from doing right by others through thick and thin.

To be perfectly frank we wouldn’t be where we are today without those relationships and that trust. The products we make have been designed to solve these people’s specific needs. The strength behind this design process is that we don’t rely on just a single expert in their field, we listen to the feedback from regular people and consult with experts across multiple disciplines from Trainers, to Patrol Officers, to SWAT, to Contractors, and members of the Special Operations community. Behind every product we offer is a story of how it came to be, a team of experts who helped us with its development, and gear testers who were willing to put put their life on the line to work out any kinks. These products have been bought with blood, sweat and tears and we believe the difference to the end user is palpable.

Having 17+ years prior experience as a climbing guide and 15+ years of sewing experience under my belt, I have a deep understanding of the gear my life depends on. Being someone who speaks mostly using terms like tensile strength, kilonewtons and thread size, I realized that most manufacturers were using sub-par material and inferior designs that favored speed of assembly, material reduction and cost over function, safety and durability. When you have the eye for it you’d be surprised to discover that this phenomenon isn’t limited to cheap gear; I’ve seen some design atrocities from some big name labels as well.

It was about 2 years ago when things really came to a head. On my way into roll call I saw one of our K9 Handlers going through their gear in the back of his Tahoe. With no exaggeration, the webbing used to make his primary lead could be bought from some of the local hardware stores and the stitching was what you would expect to see on a child’s school pack straps. I made the comment, “If I can make you a better lead would you be interested?” the handler said “Sure” and the madness began. Since then we have forged partnerships and design collaborations with some of the most respected individuals and companies in the industry.

Over the years we have been told that our costing model isn’t sustainable. We’ve actually been laughed at by people who said we couldn’t sell the quality of product we make at the prices we were charging and still experience growth. Well they were partially right, which is why it has taken us so long to get to where we are today. We have also heard, more times than we care to recall, that to become profitable we have to sell products “Designed” in the US, but “Manufactured” overseas where skilled labor is much cheaper. Since these words of “wisdom” went against everything we believe in we chose to grow slow, very slow, and keep our honor and integrity intact. So here we are, 3 years later and we have gotten our first fully functioning website up and running. This is the first time in 3 years that all of our products currently available to the public are actually available for sale online.

Until recently we have been happy flying under the Industries radar and have enjoyed not seeing knock offs of our Patent Pending products sold under the “Big Industry” labels who put as much time working around other people’s Patents as they do developing their own products. As a precaution to the seemingly inevitable stealing of our Intellectual Property we have spent the last several years working with our Patent Attorneys and talking to Industry Leaders to make sure we protect our unique product designs. And now it’s time to share our story and our products with the masses.

With 3 years of product development and testing under our belt, our no BS design philosophy, and our desire to put others first, we believe that you have found a brand you can call your own. We want you, the officer, soldier, and citizen to see yourself as a Modern Icon in society and we believe that equipping you with the gear you deserve at a fair price is worth the uphill battle of doing it right.
