How do I adjust a Modular Collar™?

The following steps will help you size your Modular Collar. Please note step 7 shows how to tighten the collar and step 8 is to loosen.

Step 1:
Remove the excess adjustment strap from inside the collar sleeve

Tip:

You can use a fingernail, collar adjustment tool (that came with your Modular Collar), or blunt object to expose enough webbing to grab with your fingers. Do not use a sharp object as it can cut or damage the webbing.

Step 2:
Determine the sizing of the collar by wrapping it around the dog’s neck

Note:

You do not actually attach the collar at this step. Once you wrap the collar around the neck you can “mark” the positioning on the sleeve with a clip or keep your thumb in the same spot as a reference.

Tip:

Note the positioning on the collar and remove it from the neck. With the collar off, put it back to the same positioning previously determined. This will help you to see which interior slot to tuck the tail of the core. Please note that if the slot is directly under the tail you will need to move a slot to the left.

Step 3:
Attach the buckle and pull slack out of the webbing

Tip:

Once the tail of the core is slotted and the collar is positioned back at the proper measurement, attach the buckle and pull slack out of the webbing. Note the closest slot to the buckle, just make sure the slot is not directly under the buckle.

Step 4:
Remove the male portion of the buckle

Step 5: To Loosen the Collar:

To make the collar larger you will feed the adjustment strap through the SAME slot and toward the slot determined in step 3

Tip:

In the demonstration video we determined that our sizing needed to be 2 slots to the right of the original adjustment slot. It can be helpful to pull back on the webbing firmly (toward the female portion of the buckle), which exposes more room to feed the adjustment strap. Feed the strap until you reach the desired slot and then pull the webbing up and through the slot.

Step 6: To Tighten the Collar:

To make the collar smaller you will feed the adjustment strap through the SAME slot and toward the slot determined in step 3

Tip:

In the demonstration video we determined that our sizing needed to be 2 slots to the left of the original adjustment slot. Feed the strap until you reach the desired slot and then pull the webbing up and through the slot.

Step 7:
Thread the webbing onto the male portion of the buckle

Step 8:
With the buckle positioned in the same place determined in step 3, feed the adjustment strap inside the sleeve.

Tip:

Note the closest slot to the buckle, just make sure the slot is not directly under the buckle. You can use the collar adjustment tool that came with the collar to start threading the webbing into the sleeve. As the end of the adjustment strap progresses toward the next slot you may need to relocate the tool down to that slot, which may mean moving the tool several times as you push the webbing into the sleeve.

Step 9: Attaching the collar:

Insert the tail of the core into the interior slot determined in step 2. Buckle the collar. Then, pull the sleeve “out” so that it puts outward tension on the webbing and ensures there is not too much slack in the collar

Note:

This step is important because the adjustment bar inside the Cobra buckle “locks” down when there is tension on the webbing, so this helps perpetuate the tension and keeps the adjustment from potentially slipping. If your dog is particularly rough on gear or you want to mitigate any potential slipping you can also upgrade to a Cobra Snakebite, which uses a tab to lock down on the webbing.

Step 10:
Confirm sizing and make adjustments as needed

Note:

Typically you want the collar snug, but you should be able to fit 1 or 2 fingers underneath (fingers side-by-side, similar to how you take a pulse reading). Each dog and environment is different, so you will need to adjust accordingly. At this stage any adjustments should be minimal and should not require moving the adjustment strap to a new slot. However you may need to use the collar adjustment tool to tuck the adjustment strap in if you make the size slightly smaller.
